Twenty seconds to steal a bike

The Prince George RCMP are encouraging all bike owners to take steps to protect their bicycles this riding season.

Spring has arrived and bicycle enthusiasts are popping up more and more in our community. Unfortunately, the more bikes on the road, the more opportunity for bike thieves.

In mid-March 2017, the Prince George RCMP received a report of a stolen bicycle from the plaza of the provincial courthouse in downtown Prince George. Surveillance video shows the thief cutting the cable lock with a small set of bolt cutters and walking away with the bike in about 20 seconds.

Police strongly encourage all bike owners to attend one of the several retail bike shops in Prince George and purchase a superior bike lock. Staff at these shops can provide excellent advice to help you protect your bike.

Providing a serial number to police significantly increases the chance of getting your bicycle back, should it be stolen. The Prince George RCMP will once again be partnering with 529 Garage, a third party bike registration and recovery APP that assists bike owners with recording essential

information about their bike, including serial numbers and photos.  Victims using the APP will be able to immediately notify all other APP users in the community that their bike has been stolen and provide photos if they choose.

Police officers and volunteers will be out in the community registering bikes on 529 Garage for FREE. An updated list of dates, times and locations will be maintained on the Anti-Bike Theft page on Prince George RCMP’s website.

If you have any information about bike theft in our community, please contact the Prince George RCMP at (250)561-3300 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1(800)222-8477, online at www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca (English only), or Text-A-Tip to CRIMES (274637) using keyword pgtips. You do not have to reveal your identity to Crime Stoppers. If you provide information that leads to an arrest or the recovery of stolen property, you could be eligible for a cash reward.
