Cariboo Cougars onto to second round

The Cariboo Cougars booked their ticket to the BC Major Midget League semifinals Saturday with a 3-0 win over the Kootenay Ice at Kin 1 to sweep their best-of-three quarter-final series.
Hunter Floris, Ty Kolle and Trey Thomas provided the offence and Zach Wickson stopped all 11 shots he faced for the shutout.
Jake Kemp kept the Ice in it all afternoon, making 32 saves.
The Cougars dominated the first period right from the opening face-off, building a 2-0 lead on a 17-3 shot advantage.
Floris scored first, taking a cross-ice feed deep in the Kootenay end. Kemp got a piece of it, but Floris was able to light the lamp at 9:10. Joel Patsey also got an assist.
Kolle scored at 14:56 on the power play, wiring a shot from the high slot and zinging it just under the crossbar. Jarin Sutton and Floris got the assists.
Cariboo continued to apply the pressure in the second, but despite a 12-4 edge in shots, were unable to build on the lead and allowed the Ice to keep within striking distance.
Thomas added an insurance marker at 11:58 of the third, directing a backhand past Kemp. Mason Richey and Daine Dubois picked up the assists.

Bring on the Giants

The Cariboo Cougars are set for a rematch of last year’s BCMML semi-finals.

The series will get underway Friday, here is the full slated schedule:

Friday, March 17 – 3:15 pm
Saturday, March 18 – 3:15 pm
Sunday, March 19 – 9:45 am** IF NECESSARY

The Giants visited Prince George somewhat early in the season and put the Cats to the test. The Giants came in tough challenging them to a hard fought weekend but the Cougars were able to skate away with 3-2 and 6-4 victories.

It was a different story a few weeks ago as the Cougars came away with two convincing wins, outscoring the Giants 16-3 in the weekend series putting them at 4-0 in the season series.

Last year’s playoffs came down to a third and deciding game, which took over 60 minutes of hockey to decide who would move on to the BCMML Finals. The rivalry will reignite this weekend as the Cougars host the Giants inside Kin 1 on the #RoadToTelusCup
