Biathlon nationals moved due to lack of snow at Otway

The Prince George Biathlon Nationals and North American Championships 2017, scheduled for March 6-12 at the Otway Nordic Centre, have been cancelled.

The decision to was made due to low snow conditions. The event is being moved to Canmore, Alberta.

The organizing group has been assured that they will be able to host the event in the near future, perhaps as soon as next season, according to a statement on the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club website. The competition committee, chaired by Deputy Chief, Vernon Neill has met exhaustively over the past few weeks to make contingency plans for the low snow challenge. The rain and warm weather this week continued to hamper the situation. With athletes expected to be traveling in from around Canada and the U.S., the decision to change the event location had to be made at this juncture in order to allow teams to rebook flights and make new travel arrangements.

The organizing committee had expected about 200 athletes to attend in addition to coaches, team managers and waxing technicians. More than 150 volunteers had been mobilized to assist.
