Tuesday night in Red Deer the Prince George Cougars dropped a 4-1 decision to the Red Deer Rebels. Evan Polei paced the Rebels attack with a goal and an assist while goaltender Lasse Petersen turned aside 23 of the 24 shots he faced for the home side. Aaron Boyd broke up Petersen’s shutout with under three minutes left in the third. Ty Edmonds started the game in goal but Nick McBride played the final 40 for the Cougars who finished the night zero-for-three on the power play and four-for-five on the penalty kill.
Red Deer led the game 3-0 after the first. Adam Musil got things started with his 15th goal on a power play. Then Evan Polei and Austin Pratt scored a minute and 43 seconds apart in the later stages of the first. Both goals came as a result of turnovers in the neutral zone. The shots after one were 15-8 for Red Deer.
A scary moment occurred late in the first as Cougars defenceman Tate Olson collided with his own teammate Brad Morrison while chasing after a loose puck in the offensive zone. Olson was shaken up on the play and would end up leaving the game for good early in the second period.
Nick McBride entered the game to start the second period and was tested early by an aggressive attack. He’d end up making 15 saves on 16 shots faced through the final 40 minutes of the game. The only puck that beat him was off the stick of newly acquired forward Lane Zablocki who crashed the net hard at the 9:19 mark and was able to stuff home a puck that was loose in the blue paint caught up in the feet of McBride. The score was 4-0 through two periods with the Rebels outshooting the Cougars 24-15.
At the 17:27 mark of the final period the Cougars ended Lasse Petersen’s shutout bid when Aaron Boyd deflected home a point shot from Shane Collins. Boyd’s fifth of the season came too little too late though as the Rebels held on for the 4-1 win, outshooting the Cougars 31-24.
