Cariboo Cougars get second win at Mac’s

Hunter Floris posted his second consecutive two-goal game as the Cariboo Cougars claimed sole possession of first place in Pool 2 at the Mac’s Major Midget Hockey Tournament with a 3-2 win over the Notre Dame Hounds at Calgary’s Father David Bauer Arena on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars moved to 2-0 at the famous holiday tournament at the mid-point of the round robin. The Hounds fell to 1-1.

Jesse Pomeroy also scored for the Cougars and Devin Sutton collected three assists. Zach Wickson turned aside 26 shots for the win.

The teams were knotted 1-1 after 40 minutes, but the Hounds took the lead early in the third.

Floris got the Cougars back on even terms with 4:01 to play with Sutton and Trey Thomas picking up the assists. Then with the Cougars on the power play late in the game Sutton set up Floris for the game winner with just five seconds on the clock to give Cariboo the crucial extra point for the win.

Pomeroy opened the scoring in the first period with Sutton and Thomas collecting the assists.

The Cougars are off Wednesday and return to the ice on Thursday against the New York Junior Islanders. The Islanders play their first game of the tournament later Tuesday.
