Cariboo Cougars open with a win at Mac’s

Hunter Floris and Ty Kolle scored two goals each as the Cariboo Cougars began the Mac’s Major Midget Hockey Tournament with a 7-3 win over the Calgary Northstars at Calgary’s Max Bell Centre.
The Cougars and Saskatchewan’s Notre Dame Hounds both opened with wins and are tied for first in Pool 2.
Mason Richey, Brennan Malgunas and Daine Dubois also scored on Boxing Day for the Cougars, while Marcus Allen turned aside 24 shots to get the win.
Kolle set up Richey midway through the first period as the Cougars scored first. After the Northstars evened things up Malgunas put the Cougars back in front with Jarin Sutton and Darian Long getting the helpers.
Dubois gave the Cougars a two-goal lead about a minute later, with Richey picking up his second point of the period with the lone assist.
The Northstars got one back before the period was out.
The Cougars got back in front by two in the second half of the second. Devin Sutton and Jermey Gervais picked up the assists on Floris’ first of the game.
Calgary got one back in the dying seconds of the period to make it 4-3, but that was as close as the hosts would get.
Floris from Jarin Sutton made it 5-3 and then Kolle scored twice in a row to round out the scoring. Richey and Joel Patsey set up his first goal and his second was unassisted.
The Cougars square off against the Hounds on Tuesday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena in an early first place battle.
