Man arrested downtown for theft

Increased police presence in the downtown area around George Street has paid off as the RCMP have arrested a man for theft.

Police say they stepped up patrols after thefts from vehicles and other property crimes increased in the area.
At about 6 p.m. Thursday, a man was seen stealing a backpack and several electronic devices from a vehicle on Fourth Avenue near Ontario Street.
Police arrested the suspect as he attempted to flee the area on a bicycle. The man was identified as Kurt Steinhauser, 35, from Prince George.
Steinhauser is well-known to them, police say. At the time of his arrest, Steinhauser was bound by an undertaking while awaiting trial on charges of theft, possession of stolen property and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose from an incident that occurred on in September as well as two probation orders for previous convictions of theft and trafficking in stolen goods.
Steinhauser was held in custody. He has been charged with theft and possession of stolen property.
To prevent theft, police remind the public not to leave any items in their vehicles during this holiday season. Police also urge the public to continue to report any criminal or suspicious activity they observe.
